Bone Marrow Transplant in India — Complete Patient Guide 2025

A bone marrow transplant (BMT), also called a stem cell transplant, is a life-saving procedure for patients with leukaemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, aplastic anaemia, and certain other blood disorders.

In the USA, a bone marrow transplant can cost $150,000 to $300,000 or more. In India, the same procedure is available at world-class hospitals for $20,000 to $35,000 — a saving of 80–90%.

Bone Marrow Transplant Cost: India vs Other Countries

CountryAutologous BMT (USD)Allogeneic BMT (USD)
India$20,000 – $25,000$25,000 – $35,000
Nigeria$60,000 – $100,000$80,000 – $120,000
United Kingdom$80,000 – $120,000$100,000 – $150,000
United States$100,000 – $200,000$150,000 – $300,000
Germany$80,000 – $130,000$100,000 – $180,000
Singapore$60,000 – $100,000$80,000 – $130,000

Types of Bone Marrow Transplant

Autologous BMT: The patient's own stem cells are collected, stored, and then returned after high-dose chemotherapy. Used for multiple myeloma, lymphoma, and some solid tumours. No donor required.

Allogeneic BMT: Stem cells from a matched donor (sibling, unrelated donor, or cord blood) are transplanted into the patient. Used for leukaemia, aplastic anaemia, and other blood disorders. Requires a compatible donor.

Haploidentical BMT: A half-matched donor (usually a parent or child) is used when a fully matched donor is not available. India's top centres have extensive experience with haploidentical transplants.

The BMT Process for International Patients

Step 1: Pre-Transplant Evaluation (1–2 weeks) Comprehensive evaluation including bone marrow biopsy, blood tests, HLA typing (for allogeneic transplant), cardiac and pulmonary evaluation, and infectious disease screening.

Step 2: Donor Search (for allogeneic BMT) If a sibling donor is available, HLA typing is performed. If no sibling match, India has access to international bone marrow registries. Haploidentical transplant is an option if no matched donor is found.

Step 3: Conditioning Chemotherapy (1–2 weeks) High-dose chemotherapy (and sometimes radiation) to destroy the patient's existing bone marrow and immune system, making space for the new stem cells.

Step 4: Transplant The stem cells are infused through a central line — the procedure itself takes only a few hours, similar to a blood transfusion.

Step 5: Engraftment and Recovery (3–6 weeks in hospital) The new stem cells travel to the bone marrow and begin producing blood cells. This process takes 2–4 weeks. The patient is kept in a sterile environment during this time.

Step 6: Post-Transplant Monitoring (4–8 weeks near hospital) After discharge, the patient must stay near the hospital for close monitoring before flying home.

Total stay in India: 10–16 weeks

Success Rates

India's top BMT centres report:

  • Autologous BMT (multiple myeloma): 85–90% engraftment, 70–80% 5-year survival
  • Allogeneic BMT (AML in remission): 60–70% 5-year survival
  • Thalassaemia (paediatric): 85–90% cure rate with matched sibling donor

Special Note: Thalassaemia Cure

India is one of the world's leading centres for curative bone marrow transplant for thalassaemia. Many children from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Iraq, and other countries with high thalassaemia rates have been cured at Indian hospitals. The cost is $20,000–$28,000 — a fraction of the cost in Europe.
